Content:

The course focuses on 3 core nanophotonic activities at DTU Fotonik. You can choose between:

• Fabrication of Microstructured optical fibres where you will have the opportunity of working with one of the only drawing towers of its kind in Europe. You will learn how to draw your own microstructured optical fibre in polymer, how to cut the fibre and how to characterise its properties such as loss and dispersion.
• Metallic conductivity is for macroscopic materials well described by the Drude model. However, as the dimensions of a system approach the mean free path of the charge carriers, this description breaks down. In this project we will investigate this phenomenon.
  We will perform optical spectroscopy of nanostructured conductive materials, and use the spectroscopic information to learn about electrical conductivity of nanometer-sized gold clusters on surfaces. The spectroscopic tool for this is terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). With this technique it is possible to determine the AC conductivity of nano-objects, without applying contacts to the objects.
• Quantum dot spectroscopy: In this project you will investigate spontaneous emission of light from quantum dots. Quantum dots are nanometer-sized "artificial atoms" that just like ordinary atoms can emit photons. Surprisingly, spontaneous emission is not an immutable property of the light source itself but can be modified by placing the quantum dot inside a nano-structured optical materials. The experiments employ time-resolved spectroscopy for detection of single-photon emission from quantum dots at cryogenic conditions. You will follow ongoing research projects and investigate various nano-structured materials such as photonic crystals and nano-cavities.
